Susen Human
Susen Human is a classical dressage rider and instructor whose work is defined by precision, depth, and an unwavering commitment to correct, systematic training.
Born near Leipzig, Germany, Susen began riding at the age of seven. Although raised outside a traditional equestrian family, she developed her foundation through structured education and competitive exposure across all three Olympic disciplines. Over time, her focus naturally shifted to dressage, where her aptitude for balance, feel, and progression found its truest expression.
Her formative years were shaped at professional yards across Germany, where classical methodology and disciplined progression formed the backbone of her riding education. Central to her philosophy is the classical Training Scale—rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness, and collection—which she regards not as a checklist, but as a living framework guiding every stage of development.
This principle is evident in her partnership with Abatayo, her soulmate and dancing partner. Susen personally trained Abatayo from Elementary level to Small Tour, adhering rigorously to the Training Scale at each stage. Over the past two years, their partnership has achieved numerous competitive successes, reflecting harmony, correctness, and clarity rather than force or spectacle. Their journey stands as a practical demonstration of how patience, consistency, and classical progression yield sustainable performance.
Alongside her riding career, Susen holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering with specialisation in Ecosystem Conservation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This academic background reinforces her analytical approach to training, particularly in biomechanics, load management, and the long-term soundness of the horse.
Since relocating to Africa in 2000, Susen has ridden, trained, and taught across Southern, West, and East Africa, developing a nuanced understanding of rider education across different competitive systems and cultural contexts. In 2005, she commenced formal dressage judge training, further refining her technical eye and deepening her commitment to classical correctness.
Today, Susen Human is recognised for her individualised instruction, her ability to cultivate true rider feel, and her disciplined, structured teaching style. Her work is characterised by a clear adherence to the Training Scale, ensuring that every movement—whether elementary or advanced—is built on correct foundations.
Her philosophy is simple and exacting: without rhythm, there is no suppleness; without suppleness, no contact; and without correct foundations, no collection worth having.
